The Southeast Kansas Humane Society of Crawford County, Kansas, began operation in 1973. Its purpose is to shelter homeless and abused animals, operate a progressive adoption program, investigate abuse cases, and encourage the spay/neuter of animals in order to control overpopulation.
The SEK Humane Society is a non-profit no-kill organization with a 501C-3 tax status. It has a membership of approximately 500 and the Society is governed by a 12 member board with terms rotating every 3 years.
Approximately 1500 animals pass through the shelter gates each year. The shelter is usually at capacity with approximately 90 dogs and 60 cats awaiting homes.
The adoption fee for dogs and puppies is $65 and $45 for cats and kittens. All animals have received their first basic shots, have been wormed, and spayed or neutered.
The Doggie Bag Resale Shop
The SEK Humane Society's Doggie Bag Resale Shop has thousands of items at bargain prices and all proceeds from the store go to support the homeless animals at the Society's shelter. The Doggie Bag has been in operation since 1987 and is the 2nd largest source of income for the Humane Society (the first is donations). The Society greatly depends on the store's monthly earnings. The profits of the resale stop help pay for: rent, building utilities, veterinary care, spay/neuter surgeries, cleaning supplies, and food for the animals.
The Doggie Bag accepts donations during open hours and can always use extra help sorting donations as well as help operating the register and front desk. All donations need to be dropped off at the stores back garage area so items can be properly sorted. If interested in volunteering at the store, or if you have questions about merchandise, please call 620-230-0369 or go to the store.
